Internet throttling is the deliberate slowing of an internet connection by an Internet Service Provider (ISP), mobile operator, or sometimes a network administrator.
- The connection usually remains active, but websites, videos, downloads, and online games may run more slowly.
- Network Congestion: Speeds are reduced during busy periods so that more users can share available bandwidth.
- Data-limit Policies: Some plans reduce speed after a user crosses a monthly data threshold.
- Traffic Management: Certain high-bandwidth activities, such as video streaming, torrenting, or gaming, may be given lower priority.
- Plan-based Prioritisation: Users on lower-tier plans may receive reduced priority when the network is busy.
- Government or institutional Control: In some situations, authorities or organisations may intentionally restrict internet performance or access.
