The Global South refers to developing, less developed, or underdeveloped countries.
- These are primarily located in Africa, Asia, and Latin America
Common Features
- Many countries experienced colonialism and continue to face developmental challenges linked to historical inequalities.
- Generally characterized by lower or middle income levels, though the group also includes major emerging economies.
- Contains a large share of the world’s population and a significant proportion of its young population.
- Poverty, food and energy security, debt, technology access, climate finance and infrastructure are major issues.
- Many Global South countries seek greater representation in institutions such as the UN Security Council, IMF and World Bank.
- There is no universally accepted list of Global South countries.
India’s Stand
- India has sought to position itself as a prominent voice for developing countries, including through the Voice of Global South Summit.
- During its 2023 G20 Presidency, India also supported the African Union’s admission as a permanent G20 member.
- India’s engagement focuses particularly on South-South cooperation, development partnerships, digital public infrastructure, climate justice, food and energy security, capacity building and reform of multilateral institutions.
