To ensure black marketing of goods is not undertaken and thereby ensure continuous supply of materials at optimal prices government introduced the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.
- Drugs, Fertilizer, Petroleum, oilseeds and oils, Raw jute and jute textile are all part of act.
- There are seven commodities scheduled under the EC Act, 1955, as essential.
- The implementation of the act lies with the State Governments.
- Centre can regulate the production of essential commodities only under extraordinary circumstances such as war, famine, extraordinary price rise, and natural calamity of grave nature.
