How a tiger can be categorized as man eater and what steps can be taken by state:
- Tigers are categorized under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, with statutory protection against hunting under section 9 (1). It can be killed if it become dangerous to human life or are so disabled / diseased beyond recovery.
- National Tiger Conservation Authority decides upon above mentioned criteria. It decides upon distinguishing between Man-killing and Man -eating tiger to ensure only very dangerous tiger is killed.
- Man-killing tigers are those that accidently killed humans mostly for self-defense.
- Man -eating is based on field evidence of preying on humans.
