The national commission that focuses on ensuring Human Rights are upheld for every citizens.

What needs to be known?

  • It was established as per the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
  • It is in conformity with the Paris Principles of Human Rights.
  • Human Rights is defined as the rights relating to life, liberty, equality, and dignity of the individual guaranteed by the Constitution.
  • NHRC can take  suo motuaction on incidents involving human rights violations.
  • The Chairperson of NHRC shall be a person who has been a Chief Justice of India or a Judge of the Supreme Court.
  • It consists of five full-time members, including judges and human rights experts in addition to the chairperson.
  • NHRC can intervene in court proceedings involving human rights violations, with the approval of the court.
