What needs to be known?

  • National Supercomputing Mission
    • Launch: Launched in 2015 under the Ministry of Electronics, aiming to install supercomputers and help in high-end computing like R&D.
    • Associated Initiative: The government has also launched the India Semiconductor Mission to boost the production of semiconductors needed for supercomputers.

  • What are Supercomputers?
    • What is it? A supercomputer is a large computing system specifically designed to solve complex, scientific and industrial challenges, which tend to be time-consuming and computation-intensive.
    • Application:Used in studying quantum mechanics, weapons research, weather forecasting and climate research, oil and gas exploration, data analytics, big data etc.
    • Indigenous Supercomputers: PARAM Siddhi, Pratyush, etc.
