India has developed many water harvesting structures and water conveyance systems specific to the different eco-regions.
- Paar System: It is a common place seen in Rajasthan where the rainwater flows from the agar (catchment) and in the process percolates into the sandy soil.
- Talab / Bandhis: Talabs are natural or man-made reservoirs seen mostly in north India.
- Saza Kuva: It is open well and is the most important source of irrigation in the Aravalli hills in Mewar, eastern Rajasthan.
- Johad: They are small earthen check dams that capture and conserve rainwater, improving percolation and groundwater recharge.
- Pat: In this water from swift-flowing hill streams is diverted into irrigation channels called pats.
