Why in the news?
- One hundred villages across the Indian Ocean region are set to be made tsunami-ready.
Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme
- What is it?: Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme is an international, community-based recognition initiative developed by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.
- Aim: To build resilient coastal communities through preparedness planning and effective response mechanisms and thereby minimise loss of life, livelihoods, and property due to tsunamis.
- Features:
- Achieved through collaborative efforts between Local communities, National authorities and Scientific and disaster-management institutions.
- Communities are recognised as “Tsunami Ready” only when a community fulfills all 12 indicators, grouped under Assessment, Preparedness and Response.
- A Tsunami ready community will have the presence of 24-hour tsunami warning systems, regular mock drills and community participation and clear evacuation routes and safe shelters.
- The Tsunami Ready recognition is valid for four years, which is renewable, ensuring continuous improvement and sustained preparedness.
