Indian Peninsular Plateau: Basics

  • The Peninsular Plateau is one of the oldest and most stable landforms of the earth.
  • Roughly triangular in shape with its base coinciding with the southern edge of the great plain of North India. The apex of the triangular plateau is at Kanyakumari.
  • It is pre-Cambrian in origin.
  • It covers a total area of about 16 lakh sq km.
  • The average height of the plateau is 600-900 m above sea level
  • The Peninsular Plateau is an aggregation of several smaller plateaus like Mewar, Malwa, Chhotanagpur, Meghalaya, Deccan Plateau, and Kathiawar Plateau.
