Modern Classification of Indian Soil: Laterite Soil

  • Conditions for formation
    • There must be laterite rock or structure.
    • Formed under high temperature and heavy rainfall.
  • Characteristics
    • Subjected to heavy leaching due to high rainfall that results in low fertility.
    • Brown in colour
  • Composition
    • Deficit in lime and silica.
    • Rich in iron oxides and aluminium compounds.
  • Distribution
    • Western Ghats in Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala.
    • In the state of Orissa, in the Eastern Ghats.
    • Amarkantak plateau region of Madhya Pradesh.
  • Crops: Groundnut, cashew nut, and rubber.
  • Other Use: Used as a building material.
