International Biodiversity Conservation Initiatives: Bird Life International (BI) and WWF

Bird Life International (BI)

  • What is it?: World’s largest nature conservation partnership, consisting of 120 national nature conservation organisations across the globe. 
  • Mission: BI is dedicated to the conservation of birds, their habitats, and global biodiversity.
  • Aims: To work collaboratively with people to promote sustainability in the use of natural resources.
  • Role as Red List Authority: BI serves as the official Red List authority for birds on behalf of the (IUCN).

World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF)

  • Formation: Established in 1961, WWF (formerly known as the World Wildlife Fund) is a non governmental organisation (NGO) headquartered in Gland, Switzerland.
  • Mission and Focus: Aims to “stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature.”
  • Initiatives – Wildlife Trade Monitoring Network (TRAFFIC), Living Planet Report, Earth Hour.
