Volcanoes: Classification of Volcanoes Based on Time Period of Eruption

Active Volcanoes

  • An active volcano is a volcano which is either erupting or is likely to erupt in the future.
  • Most of the active volcanoes are found in the Pacific Ring of Fire.
  • For example – Barren Island in Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean.

Dormant volcano

  • A dormant volcano is one that is not currently erupting but has erupted within recordable history and is expected to erupt again in the future.
  • For example – Mt Kilimanjaro

Extinct volcano

  • Extinct volcanoes are considered dead and are not expected to ever erupt again.
  • For example – Aconcagua of Andes
