Why in the news?

  • Aditiya – L1 has revealed the reason behind the unusual behavior of a 2024 solar storm.

Aditya-L1 Mission

  • Launched by: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)
  • Objectives: To study and understand the mechanisms behind-
    • Coronal Heating and Solar Wind Acceleration
    • Initiation of Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), flares and near-earth space weather;
    • Solar wind distribution and temperature anisotropy etc.
  • Launch Vehicle: Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) XL.
  • Orbit: It would be placed into a point in space known as the L1 Lagrange point.
  • Achievements:
    • Captured images of the Sun through payloads SUIT and VELC.
    • Completion of First Halo Orbit in July – Aditya-L1 in the Halo orbit takes 178 days to complete a revolution around the L1 point.
Solar Storm

  • A solar storm is a disturbance on the Sun that releases huge amounts of energy in the form of radiation, charged particles, and magnetic fields.
  • It mainly arises from Solar flares, Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and High-speed solar winds from coronal holes
  • It affects space weather and can impact Earth’s magnetosphere.
