Biodiversity Conservation Projects: Project Snow Leopard

  • Launch: Launched in 2009 by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) of the Government of India.
  • Aims: To protect and conserve India’s unique population of high-altitude wildlife, with a particular focus on the snow leopard.
Snow Leopard

  • Also called ‘ghost of the mountains’ in India’s easternmost tiger reserve.
  • Snow leopards act as an indicator of the health of the mountain ecosystem due to their position as the top predator in the food web.
  • Protection Status
    • IUCN – Vulnerable
    • CITES – Appendix I
    • Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 – Schedule I
