Climatology: Major Heat Zones of the Earth

Tropical Zone

  • The region lies from the Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N), across Equator (0°) to the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5°S).
  • The Sun’s rays fall directly at least once a year and it is the hottest zone of the Earth.

Temperate Zone

  • There are two temperate zones lying in between 23 1⁄2° to 66 1⁄2° latitudes in both hemispheres. 
  • These regions have moderate, tolerable temperatures.

Frigid Zone

  • This is the coldest zone of the Earth. 
  • This area lies to the north of the Arctic circle (66.6°N) and to the south of the Antarctic circle (66.5°S).
