East Flowing Peninsular Rivers: Krishna River System

Basics

  • Fact: The Krishna is the second-largest east-flowing river in the Peninsula.
  • Origin: Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra
  • Borders: It is bounded by the Balaghat range on the north, by the Eastern Ghats on the south and the east, and by the Western Ghats on the west.
  • Major Dams: Almatti Dam, Srisailam Dam, Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, and Prakasham Barrage
  • Tributaries of Krishna River
    • Right Bank: Venna, Koyna, Panchganga, Dudhganga, Ghataprabha, Malaprabha and Tungabhadra rivers.
    • Left Bank: Bhima, Dindi, Peddavagu, Halia, Musi, Paleru, and Munneru rivers.

Major Tributaries

  1. Bhima River
    • Originates in Bhimashankar hills, Western Ghats in Maharashtra.
    • Bhima flows through Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh states.
  2. Musi River
    • Originates in Ananthagiri Hills in the west of Hyderabad.
    • Dams – Osman Sagar reservoir and Himayat Sagar.
    • Acts as a source of water for Hyderabad.
    • Hussain Sagar Lake was built on a tributary of the River Musi.
  3. Koyna River
    • Rises in Mahabaleshwar of Maharashtra.
    • Koyna River flows in a North-South direction
    • Dam – Koyna dam (caused one of the reservoir earthquakes in India)
  4. Dudhganga River
    • It is a right-bank tributary of the river Krishna.
    • The Kalammawadi Dam has been built on the Dudhganga River.
  5. Ghataprabha River
    • Originates in the Western Ghats at an altitude of 884 m.
    • Passing states –  Karnataka and Maharashtra.
    • It joins the Krishna River at Almatti.
    • The Ghataprabha Project is a hydroelectric and irrigational project across the river.
  6. Malaprabha River
    • It originates in Kankumbi of Karnataka.
    • Dam – Navilatirtha Dam.
    • UNESCO sites of Aihole, Pattadakal and Badami are located on the banks of this river.
