International Biodiversity Conservation Initiatives: MIKE

  • Fullform: Monitoring the Illegal Killing of Elephants (MIKE)
  • Formation: Established in 1997 by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
  • Aims: To monitor trends in elephant poaching across their range in Africa and Asia, providing vital data for conservation efforts.
  • Participating Sites:
    • Currently, there are 28 MIKE sites in Asia, spread across 13 countries.
    • India leads with 10 MIKE sites, followed by two sites each in Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Additionally, there’s one site each in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.
