Lokayukta is a state-level anti-corruption ombudsman in India, complementing the national Lokpal. It investigates complaints against public officials like chief ministers, ministers, and bureaucrats for graft and maladministration.
- Recommendations are advisory and non-binding. They submit annual reports to the Governor and the legislature.
- The Administrative Reforms Commission (1966-70) had recommended the creation of the Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayukta in the states.
- It is formed by the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act of 2013.
Appointment
- The governor of the state appointed Lokayukta after consulting the chief justice of the state high court and the leader of the Opposition in the state legislative assembly.
Tenure
- The term of office fixed for Lokayukta is of 5 years duration or 65 years of age, whichever is earlier.
