Modern Classification of Indian Soil: Peaty, and Marshy Soil

  • These are soils with a large amount of organic matter and considerable amount of soluble salts.
  • They are black in colour and highly acidic. Most humid regions have this type of soil.
  • Most of the soil is found in waterlogged conditions.
  • Composition
    • It is rich in organic matter and has high salinity. 
    • They are deficient in potash and phosphate.
  • Distribution
    • In Alleppey in Kerala, it is known as Karri.
    • Also occurs in coastal areas of Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Sundarbans in West Bengal, and Almora in Uttarakhand.
  • Crops – Rice
  • Favourable for mangroves.
