Ocean Acidification: Basics

Basics

  • Ocean acidification is the continual decline in the pH values of the Earth’s seas, making them increasingly acidic. The absorption of extra carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere by seawater is the primary cause of this occurrence. Carbonic acid is formed when carbon dioxide dissolves in seawater due to a sequence of chemical processes.
    • Ocean acidification is the evil twin of Global warming
    • The combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, which emits massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, is the primary cause of ocean acidification.
