Peninsular Drainage System: Basics and Classification

Basics

  • Older than the Himalayan one.
  • Associated features are broad and largely graded shallow valleys and mature rivers.
  • Characteristics:  Fixed course, absence of meanders, and non-perennial flow of water.

Classification

  1. East Flowing Rivers
    • Flow into the Bay of Bengal.
    • These rivers carry larger sediments than west-flowing rivers leading to the formation of deltas.
    • The major rivers are Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Mahanadi, Pennar, Subarnerekh, Vaiga, and Brahmani.
  2. West Flowing Rivers
    • Flow into the Arabian Sea.
    • Fewer and smaller in number as compared to east-flowing rivers.
    • Some rivers flow through faults between Satpura and Vindhya.
    • For example – Tapi, Narmada, Mahi, Sabarmati, and Luni rivers.
