Ecology: Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Consumers

Primary Consumers (Herbivores)

  • These are plant-eating organisms.
  • They occupy the second level of a food chain, directly consuming producers.
  • Examples: Cows, deer, rabbits, insects that eat leaves.

Secondary Consumers (Carnivores)

  • These are meat-eating organisms.
  • They occupy the third level of a food chain, feeding on primary consumers.
  • Examples: Lions, wolves, snakes, fish that eat smaller fish.

Tertiary Consumers (Apex Predators)

  • These are organisms with few or no natural predators above them in the food chain.
  • They occupy higher levels of the food chain, feeding on both secondary consumers and sometimes primary consumers.
  • Examples: Eagles, sharks, large cats, orca whales.
