She was the queen of the princely state of Jhansi
- Born in 1828 at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
- At the age of 14, Manu got married to the Maharaja of Jhansi, Gangadhar Rao Newalkar. Hence, Manikarnika became Laxmibai, Rani of Jhansi.
Way to Struggle
- After the death of her child, she adopted a son, Damodar Rao, from Gangadhar Rao’s extended family.
- In 1853, when the Maharaja of Jhansi died, Lord Dalhousie refused to acknowledge the (adopted) child and applied the Doctrine of Lapse, and annexed the state, which led to conflict as part of the 1857 revolt.
- She died fighting on the battlefield on 17th June 1858.
