Important Hill Ranges of India: Satpura Range

  • Satpura range is a series of seven mountains ( sat – seven and pura – mountain)
  • Satpura is taller than the Vindhyas.
  • It runs in an east-west direction, south of the Vindhyas and in between the Narmada and Tapi, roughly parallel to these rivers. 
  • They run for a distance of about 900 km.
  • It is a series of smaller hills and is not continuous.
  • Major Ranges are
    • Rajpipla – Gauligarh – Mahadeo – Maikala
    • Satmala – Ajanta – Nirmala
  • Average elevation – 100 to 900m
  • Dhupgarh (1350m) near Panchmarhi on the Mahadeo hills is the highest peak.
  • Amarkantak (1127m) is another important peak.
  • Some parts of Vindhya and Sathpura are block mountains.
  • Rift Valley – Narmada and Tapi flow through the rift valley between Vindhya and Satpura range.
