Timeline in India

  • 1602 – Formation of Dutch East India Company
  • 1606 – First settlement in Masulipatnam
  • 1609 – First fort in Pulicat Lake and it is called Fort Jalidara which acts as Dutch headquarters and later shafted to Devapatnam., Danish possession in Bengal is Pipli.

Reason for Decline

  • Dutch focus shifted to the Malayan Peninsula region.
  • The Dutch were defeated in the Battle of Hooghly (part of the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672 – 74) ).
  • Battle of Colachel (1741) between the Dutch and Travancore.
  • Anglo – Dutch Treaty (1814).

Dutch Contribution

  • Hortus Malabari Goose is a work by Vanquer that deal with flora and fauna of the Malabar region.
