Timeline

  • 1664 – Formation of the French East India Company that heavily depended on the government.
  • 1667 – Setting up the factory at Surat
  • 1673 – Established Chandernagore township near Calcutta and Fort Louis in Pondicherry.

Anglo-French Rivalry and Wars

Carnatic Wars Features
First Carnatic War (1744 – 48)
  • Extension of Anglo-French war in Europe which was caused by the Austrian War of Succession.
  • British led by Robert Clive (First Governor General of Bengal) and French by Duplex.
Second Carnatic War (1749- 54)
  • The British and the French sided with opposing powers in the War of Succession in the Carnatic.
  • French led by Duplex and English by Robert Clive.
  • French failed and Duplex was replaced by Charles Godehev.
Third Carnatic War (1756 – 63)
  • Extension of Seven Year War between French and English.
  • French led by Comte de Lally and English by Sir Eyre Coote.
  • The French were defeated at the Battle of Wandiwash and limited to commercial activity.
