INS Arihant
- It was launched in 2009 and commissioned in 2016.
- It is India’s first Indigenous nuclear-powered ballistic missile capable submarine built under the secretive Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project, which was initiated in the 1990s.
- INS Arihant and its class of submarines are classified as ‘SSBN.
- INS Arihant is presently armed with a K-15 SLBM with a range of 750 km.
Project – 75 I
- Project 75 (I), approved in 2007, is part of the Indian Navy’s 30-year Plan for indigenous submarine construction.
- It will be developed under the strategic partnership model which was promulgated in 2017 to boost indigenous defence manufacturing.
- They are a planned class of diesel-electric submarines, which are to be built for the Indian Navy.
- The P-75I class is a follow-on of the P-75 class submarines of the Indian Navy.
- Under this project, the Indian Navy intends to acquire six conventional, diesel-electric attack submarines, which will also feature advanced capabilities – including air-independent propulsion (AIP), ISR, special operations forces (SOF), anti-ship warfare (AShW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), land-attack capabilities and other features.
- All six submarines are expected to be constructed in India, under the Make in India initiative.
Project – 75
- Project 75 includes the indigenous construction of six submarines of Scorpene design.
- These submarines are being constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with Naval Group, France.
- Six Scorpene submarines are being built under Project-75 by MDL under technology transfer from Naval Group of France under a $3.75 billion deal signed in October 2005.
- The six submarines under project 75 are: INS Kalvari, INS Vagsheer, INS Vela, , INS Khanderi, INS Karanj, and INS Vagir.
