Ecology: Seaweeds

What is it?

  • “Seaweed” is the common name for countless species of marine plants and algae that grow in the ocean as well as in rivers, lakes, and other water bodies.
  • They range in colours from red, green, brown and black and also vary in size, from microscopic to large underwater forests.
  • Seaweeds often form dense growths on rocky shores or accumulations in shallow water.

Uses of Seaweeds

  • Food and Nutrition: Seaweed is consumed as a source of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibre.
  • Agriculture: Seaweed extracts are used as fertilisers and soil conditioners to enhance plant growth.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Seaweed contains compounds with potential medicinal properties, used in various pharmaceutical products.
  • Cosmetics: Seaweed extracts are utilised in skincare and cosmetic products due to their moisturising and antioxidant properties.
  • Biotechnology: Seaweed is studied for its potential applications in biofuels, bioplastics, and wastewater treatment.
  • Animal Feed: Seaweed is used as a supplement in animal feed to improve nutrition and digestion.
  • Industrial Applications: Seaweed extracts are used in various industrial processes, including paper production, textile dyeing, and water purification.
