Indian Handicraft: Clay and Pottery Work

  • Other Name: Pottery has been known as the ‘Lyric of handicrafts’ as it is moulded like a poetic composition.
  • Evolution of Pottery
    • The earliest evidence has been found in the Neolithic site of Mehrgarh, Pakistan. 
    • The most famous pottery from the ancient period is the Painted Grey Ware pottery, which is related to the Vedic period (1000-600 BCE).
    • Evidence of red and black pottery can be found that has been dated to 1500-300 BCE and found in large parts of West Bengal.
    • The Northern Black Polished Ware, which was made in two phases: first in 700-400 BCE and next during 400-100 BCE belongs to the Mauryan period.
    • Roulette Pottery’ can be dated to 200-100 BCE. Most of the evidence has been found from Arikamedu in Pondicherry. 
    • Glazed pottery with the arrival of Islam.
