Indian Monsoon: Annual Rainfall in India

Areas of Very High Rainfall (more than 200m)

  • These include western side of Western Ghats.
  • Average rainfall is 200 – 400 cm.
  • Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, parts of Manipur, Tripura and north – eastern tip of West Bengal also receive 200cm or more with isolated pockets like Mawsynram and Cherrapunji receiving over 400 cm.

Areas of High Rainfall (100 – 200 cm)

  • Eastern slopes of western ghats, northern plains, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

Areas of Low Rainfall (50 – 100 cm)

  • Large parts of Gujarat, interior Maharashtra, western Madya Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.
