Individual Satyagraha (1941)

  • What was it?: Individual Satyagraha was Gandhi’s nonviolent protest movement that began in 1940. 
  • Aim: The movement’s goal was to affirm the right to free speech and to protest the British government’s discriminatory policies. 
  • Reason for Launch: The movement emerged in response to the failure of the British government’s August Offer.
  • Sathyagrahi
    • Vinoba Bhave launched the first Individual Satyagraha on October 17, 1940.
    • He was succeeded by Jawaharlal Nehru, and Brahma Dutt.
  • Slogan: Delhi Chalo
  • Objectives
    • To demonstrate that nationalist patience was not due to weakness.
    • To express people’s disinterest in the war and their failure to distinguish between Nazism and the double autocracy that ruled India.
    • To give the government another chance to accept Congress’ demands peacefully.
  • Gandhi cancelled the movement because of
    • Limited people participation.
    • Low impact.
    • Arrival of Cripps Mission.
