- As the Second World War broke out, the British dragged Indians to war as Britain’s ally, without consulting the opinion of Indians.
- This infuriated the masses.
Responses from Various Corners
- Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhash Chandra Bose criticised the decision of Britain and said that war should be fought between imperial powers. Bose also said that the opportunity should be used and civil disobedience movements should be initiated.
- Gandhi and Congress – Offered support to the British based on two grounds.
- A constitutional assembly should be convened after the war to determine the political structure of free India.
- A responsible government should be established.
- But both the demands were rejected by Viceroy Lord Linlithgow.
- Muslim League under Jinnah supported Britain.
