Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction

What is it?

  • The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015–2030) is a global agreement adopted by UN member states to reduce disaster risks and enhance resilience.

Goal

  • The framework aims to prevent new disaster risks, reduce existing risks, and strengthen resilience through integrated actions. It sets seven global targets to be achieved by 2030.

Four Priorities for Action:

  • Understanding disaster risk.
  • Strengthening disaster risk governance to manage disaster risk.
  • Investing in disaster reduction for resilience.
  • Enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response, and to “Build Back Better” in recovery, rehabilitation, and reconstruction.

Seven Targets

  • Reduce global disaster mortality (compared to 2005-2015 levels).
  • Reduce the number of affected people per 100,000 population.
  • Reduce economic losses due to disasters.
  • Reduce damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services (e.g., health, education).
  • Increase the number of countries with disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies.
  • Enhance international cooperation for disaster risk reduction.
  • Improve availability and access to early warning systems and disaster risk information.

Role of Stakeholders:

  • Recognises the role of local government, communities, and the private sector in disaster risk reduction.
  • Emphasises the importance of an all-of-society approach, involving the participation of multiple stakeholders.

Monitoring and Reporting:

  • Calls for the establishment or enhancement of national and local disaster risk reduction strategies by 2020.
  • Advocates for periodic reviews and updates of strategies to reflect changing risk contexts.
