UNESCO Sites in India: The Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysala (2023)

  • Location: Karnataka
  • What is it?: They are a group of three famous temple complexes.
  • Built by: Hoysala Empire
  • Period: 11th and 14th centuries.
  • Temples Included
    • Chennakeshava Temple at Belur: Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, known for its beautiful carvings and sculptures.
    • Hoysaleswara Temple at Halebidu: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, famous for its detailed friezes showing stories from Hindu epics.
    • Keshava Temple at Somanathapura: Also dedicated to Vishnu, known for its perfectly balanced and detailed artwork.
  • Architecture
    • Star-shaped (stellate) design of the temples.
    • Extensive and very fine carvings on the outer walls and pillars.
    • Use of soft soapstone, which allowed intricate detailing.
    • Rich depictions of gods, dancers, musicians, animals, and scenes from epics.
