Salient Features of the Constitution: Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP)

  • Dr. B.R. Ambedkar called the Directive Principles of State Policy the ‘novel feature’ of the Indian Constitution.
  • They are mentioned in Part IV of the Indian Constitution.
  • They can be classified into three broad categories–socialist, Gandhian, and liberal intellectual.
  • The Directive Principles are meant to promote the ideals of social and economic democracy.
  • They seek to establish a ‘welfare state’ in India.
  • They are not enforceable by the courts for their violation.
  • They are fundamental to governance and impose a moral obligation on the state authorities for their application.
