Awadh Architecture

  • They are commonly found around regions of Lucknow.
  • Built by the Nawabs of Awadh during the 18th-19th century CE. 
  • They built religious as well as secular structures. 
  • These structures were made mainly using mortar.
  • Major Examples
    • Bara Imambara, Lucknow – Built-in 1784, it comprises Asfi mosque, Bhul-bhulaiya (the labyrinth), and a step well with running water. 
    • Chota Imambara, Lucknow – Built in 1838, it serves as a mausoleum for Nawab Muhammad Ali Shah and his mother. 
    • Rumi Darwaza (Turkish Gate), Lucknow – Built in 1784, it is situated between Bara & Chota Imambara and is believed to be named after Sufi mystic, Jalal ud-Din Muhammad Rumi.
