Calcutta Congress Session (1928)

  • This session witnessed a clash between those who argued for dominion status and those who argued for full independence.
  • This session witnessed conflict on the Nehru Report between young leaders like Subhash Chandra Bose and Jawahar Lal Nehru, and older leaders like Motilal Nehru.
  • Jinnah and the Muslim League rejected the Nehru Report.
  • Mahatma Gandhi proposed a resolution that called for the British to grant dominion status to India within two years.

Irwin Declaration (1929)

  • The Irwin Declaration or Deepavali Declaration was a statement made by the then Viceroy, Lord Irwin regarding the status of India in the British Empire.
  • It was a five-statement declaration in non-legal language.
  • This was to clarify to Indians that India will attain dominion status shortly.
