Delhi Manifesto 1929
- What is it?: The Delhi Manifesto was a political document released by the Indian National Congress in 1929.
- Key Points
- The purpose of the Round Table Conference should be not to determine whether or when dominion status was to be reached, but to formulate a constitution to implement the dominion status (thus acting as a constituent assembly), and the basic principle of dominion status should be immediately accepted.
- Congress should have a majority representation at the conference.
- There should be a general amnesty for political prisoners and a policy of conciliation.
Lahore Session (1929)
- Presided by Jawaharlal Nehru
- In this session, members agreed that the Congress and Indian nationalists should fight for Purna Swaraj.
- The Congress approved a motion for complete Independence and the President of Congress hoisted the flag of Purna Swaraj on the banks of the Ravi river on the midnight of 31 December 1929, in front of a huge crowd.
- This was the day when for the first time the nationalists unfurled the tricolour
- Congress hence decided to observe 26th January 1930 as the total independence or Purna Swaraj Day, later celebrated as the Republic Day in modern India.
