Classical Dance Forms in India: Kathak

  • Location: North India
  • Origin of Word: The word Kathak has been derived from the word Katha which means a story.
  • History
    • It was primarily a temple or village performance wherein the dancers narrated stories from ancient scriptures that spread during the bhakti movement.
    • Under the Mughal emperors and their nobles, Kathak became a court dance and got Persian influence in costumes.
    • Under the patronage of Wajid Ali Shah, the last Nawab of Awadh, it grew into a major art form.
  • Feature: Usually a solo performance, it gives more focus to the footwork.
  • Associated Music: Kathak is the only form of classical dance wedded to Hindustani music.
