About Mauritius 

  • Mauritius is an island country in the Indian Ocean on the east side of the African continent. Its capital is Port Louis.
  • Mauritius is an extended neighbour of India.

Areas of Cooperation

  1. Historical Relations
    • Indian – Mauritius relations can be traced back to the British period when both were British colonies and Indians were intruded labourers in plantations.
  2. Political Relations
    • Start of Relation: India and Mauritius established diplomatic relations in 1948.
    • International Forums: Both countries cooperate closely in international forums such as the United Nations (UN), Commonwealth, and Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) to address global and regional challenges.
  3. Diplomatic Relations:
    • Diplomatic Ties: India and Mauritius established diplomatic relations shortly after Mauritius gained independence from Britain in 1968. India was one of the first countries to recognize Mauritius’ independence.
    • High-level Visits: Regular high-level visits between the two countries have helped strengthen bilateral ties. Indian Prime Ministers and Presidents have visited Mauritius, and Mauritian leaders have reciprocated with visits to India.
  4. Economic Relations
    • Under the Special Economic Package India extended support for the Metro rail project and new Supreme Court building.
    • The Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA) between India and Mauritius to enhance trade and investment ties
  5. Defence Relations
    • India financed the construction of an Offshore Patrol Vessel called Barracuda.
    • India supplied them with Dornier aircraft and the Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv.
    • India gave line credit for procuring Indian defence equipment.
  6. Cultural and Humanitarian Cooperation
    • As a tribute to Gandhi, the National Day of  Mauritius was celebrated on March 12 ( Dandi March was launched).
    • Mauritius hosts the World Hindu Secretariat.
    • India established the Indira Gandhi Center for Indian Culture.
    • Yoga and AYUSH medicines are popular in Mauritius.
  7. Educational Collaboration:
    • Cooperation in education and human resource development, including scholarships and exchange programs for students and professionals.

Significance of Mauritius for India

  • Countering China in the Indian Ocean Region.
  • Boosting Vision SAGAR doctrine.

Concerns

  • Increasing China’s presence through the Belt and Road Initiative.
  • Bureaucratic hurdles, 
  • Trade imbalances.
