Modern Architecture: Portuguese Influence in Architecture

Background

  • The Portuguese brought with them the Iberian style of architecture. 
  • They also introduced the concept of ‘Patio houses’ and ‘Baroque style’, developed in the late 16th century in Europe to express the strength of the Church

Major Examples

  1. Sé Cathedral in Goa
    • Sé Cathedral in Goa was completed in 1619 CE. 
    • It was built in the Portuguese late-Gothic style. 
    • It includes a large bell called the “Golden Bell”.
  2. Basilica of Bom Jesus (Holy Jesus), Goa
    • It is a World Heritage Site built in Baroque style and was completed in 1604 CE. 
    • It holds the body of revered St. Francis Xavier.
  3. St. Paul’s Church, Diu
    • It was built in Baroque style and was completed in 1610 CE.
