- Formation – NDMA was formed in 2005 and it is the highest authority on disaster management under the DM Act of 2005.
- Functions
- The NDMA is tasked with establishing the rules and regulations for disaster management to guarantee prompt and efficient response to calamities.
- It will approve the National Disaster Management Plan and the DM plans of the Central Ministries/Departments.
- The NDMA guidelines will help the Central Ministries, Departments, and States construct their own DM plans.
- It will take whatever additional actions it deems necessary to mitigate the effects of disasters, prevent them from happening, or increase capacity and readiness for handling potentially dangerous or catastrophic situations.
- NDMA has the authority to authorise the Departments or authorities concerned to make emergency procurement of provisions or materials for rescue and relief in a threatening disaster situation or a disaster.
- Central Ministries/Departments and State Governments will extend necessary cooperation and assistance to NDMA for carrying out its mandate.
- National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has the authority to oversee, lead, and manage the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The broad principles and guidelines established by the NDMA serve as the foundation for the operations of the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM).
- Dealing with both man-made and natural disasters is the responsibility of the NDMA. However, other incidents like mine disasters, port and harbour emergencies, forest fires, oilfield fires, and oil spills mainly come under the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
- National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) handles incidents like counter-insurgency terrorism, law and order situations, hijacking, air accidents, and CBRN weapon systems, which require the close involvement of security forces and/or intelligence agencies.
