National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)

  • It is under the Home Affairs Ministry.
  • It was founded in 2006 and has its headquarters in New Delhi. It is the only dedicated disaster response force in the world.
  • It is governed by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), which establishes plans, rules, and procedures for disaster relief.
  • It is the world’s only force exclusively committed to disaster relief.
  • The only independent, high-tech, multidisciplinary, multiskilled agency with extensive reaction capabilities.
  • Currently, the NDRF has twelve battalions strategically positioned throughout the nation to offer rapid response.
  • Role
    • Providing an immediate and effective reaction to crises and calamities.
    • Carrying out rescue missions
    • Extending assistance to the needy during emergencies.
    • Collaborating with other establishments to offer rehabilitation and relief.
    • Supplying  State Response Forces (Police, Civil Defence, and Home Guards) with operational-level training.
    • Planning public awareness campaigns and community capacity-building programs.
    • Participating in practical training activities and mock drills.
