- Established based on the recommendation of the Santhanam Committee on the prevention of corruption.
- Formed in 1964 by executive resolution, it became a statutory body as per the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC)bill.
- Composition: Consists of the chairperson and two other members appointed by the President.

- Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha
- Home Minister
- Tenure: 65 years of age or 4 years
- Reappointment: Not eligible under the state or centre for reappointment
- Removal: Based on misbehaviour or incapacity
- Salary: Same salary as the chairperson of UPSC and members same as the members of UPSC.
- Functions
- To enquire into cases involving public servants with respect to corruption
- Control over CBI
- Part of disciplinary proceedings against central service officers and All India Officers.
- CVC is part of the appointment committee of the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI chairman
- Has the power of a civil court.
