Provincial Elections of 1937

  • Provincial elections were held in 1936-37 as mandated by the Government of India Act 1935.
  • Areas where the provincial elections were held were – Madras, Central Provinces, Bihar, Orissa, United Provinces, Bombay Presidency, Assam, NWFP, Bengal, Punjab, and Sindh.
  • It was the first election where a large number of people participated and total participants accounted for 14% of the population.
  • Election Results
    • Congress emerged as the single largest party and the Muslim League as the second.
    • The Unionist Party won 106 seats.
    • The result of the election was a severe blow to the Muslim League.
