Regional Groupings: SAARC

  • Full-Form: South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation
  • What is it?: SAARC is an economic and political organisation of eight countries in South Asia. 
  • Formation: SAARC was formed in 1985.
  • Objective: The main objective of SAARC is to promote economic growth, social progress, and cultural development within the South Asia region.
  • Headquarters: Kathmandu, Nepal. 
  • Members:
    • Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan as the heads who adopted the charter formally. 
    • Afghanistan joined as the 8th member of SAARC in 2007.
