About Commission
- Simmon commission was appointed as per Government of India Act, 1919 to review the functioning of the Act in 1927.
- The commission is referred to as the Indian Statutory Commission headed by Sir John Simon.
Mandate of the Commission
- The commission’s mandate was to advise the British government on whether India was ready for future constitutional reforms and along what lines.
India’s Reaction to Simon Commission
- Congress: The Congress session in Madras (December 1927), presided by M.A. Ansari resolved to boycott the commission “at every step and in every shape”.
- Muslim League: A branch of the Muslim League under Jinnah’s leadership, boycotted the Commission.
- Tej Bahadur Sapru: He led the Liberal Federation that boycotted the Simon Commission.
- Justice Party: Supported the Simon Commission.
