Kalinga Painting

  • Location: Kalighat Kali Temple, Kolkata
  • Origin: Kalighat paintings originated in the 19th century Bengal.
  • Theme: The depiction of Hindu gods and other mythological characters.
  • Characteristics
    • Easily reproduced by lithography.
    • Use of water color

Warli Painting

  • Location: Maharashtra
  • Origin: Its roots may be traced to as early as the 10th century CE.
  • Similarity: They bear a resemblance to those created in the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka.
  • Theme: Scenes portraying hunting, fishing and farming, festivals and dances, trees and animals.
  • Characteristics
    • Women were mainly engaged in the creation of these paintings.
    • Basic graphic features like a circle, a triangle and a square are used in these rudimentary wall paintings which are monosyllabic in nature.
