Provisions Coming into Force on November 26, 1949

  • Certain provisions of the Constitution, such as those related to citizenship, elections, and temporary provisions, came into force on November 26, 1949.
  • These included Articles: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 60, 324, 366, 367, 379, 380, 388, 391, 392, 393.

Major Provisions Coming into Force on January 26, 1950

  • The majority of the Constitution’s provisions came into force on January 26, 1950, which is celebrated as Republic Day.
  • This day was chosen for its historical significance, as Purna Swaraj Day (complete independence) was declared on January 26, 1930, by the Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress (INC).

Repeal of Previous Acts

  • With the commencement of the Constitution, the Indian Independence Act of 1947 and the Government of India Act of 1935 (along with related amendments) were repealed.
  • However, the Abolition of Privy Council Jurisdiction Act (1949) was continued.
