Mural Paintings in India: Sittanavasal Cave and Badami Cave Paintings

Sittanavasal Cave (Arivar Koil) Paintings

  • Location – Tamil Nadu
  • Paintings based on Jainism.
  • The central element of the paintings in Sittanavasal is a pond with lotuses.
  • These murals have close resemblance to Bagh and Ajanta paintings.
  • The medium used for painting was vegetable and mineral dyes, and was done by putting colours on the surface of thin wet lime plaster. 
  • The common colours included yellow, green, orange, blue, black and white.

Badami Cave Paintings

  • Dates back to the early Chalukyan dynasty
  • One of earliest surviving Hindu paintings
  • Depict Chalukyan kings, Jain saints, Shiva and Parvati among others.
  • Cave 3 contains murals of four armed Brahma on his swan.
  • Similar to Ajanta and Bagh paintings.
